THE BABYSITTERS CLUB

My secret shame: watching “The Babysitters Club” (BSC) re-runs.

Inspired by the novels written by Ann M. Martin, the book turned television drama was based on a gorup of middle school students living in the fictional town of Stoneybrook, Connecticut.

They form and run a local business called the “Babysitters Club” holding club meetings and helping parents find a babysitter using members in their club.

The main characters:

  • Kirsty Thomas: tom-boy & BSC club president
  • Claudia Kishi: token Asian & creative-thinker
  • Mary Anne Spier: innocent achiever
  • Stacey McGill: boy crazy trendanista
  • Dawn Schafer: spiritual soul activist
  • Mallory Pike: self-conscious red head
  • Jessi Ramsey: African-American junior member

For some reason I would never admit to watching this show but it wasn’t until the 1995 movie re-make (The Babysitters Club) starring Larisa Oleynik and Rachael Leigh Cook  that I would proudly sing the theme song.

What can I say… I’m a sucker for those storylines with a moral at the end!

PUSH POP CANDY

Please tell me y’all remember “Push Pops”, those cute fruit flavoured lollipops that were dispensed like lipstick.

The slogan “Don’t push me, push a Push Pop!” will forever be etched into my memory.

Other catch phrases included:

  • Isn’t time you pushed a Push Pop?
  • Give life a push.
  • Push a Push Pop, push it for flavor, push a Push Pop, save some for later!

Manufactured by Topps (best known for Bazooka Joe) varieties included Original, Triple Power and Push Pump Spray.

Topps didn’t stop there. They also developed the infamous “Ring Pop”, using the same brand of fruit flavoured candy shaped into a ring!

The best thing about my childhood was that I was oblivious to what a calorie was? Nowadays as soon as I eat a handful of skittles I Google how many minutes it would take to burn off at the gym.

LA GEAR LIGHTS

I don’t care what anybody thinks but nothing says swag like a pair of LA Gear Lights!  Back in the day (1992 that is) a pair of kids LA Lights would set you back 50 beans from Footlocker.

“Light Gear” CrossRunner shoes had built-in red LED lights in the heels so that when your foot hit the ground they would light up.

By 1993 the footwear’s popularity began to dwindle with the company restricting access to the shoes in an attempt to gain more upscale clientele. However, in doing so the company was so desperate to sell the remaining inventory that LA Gear shoes began showing up at flea markets, swap meets and supermarkets.

ALWAYS COCA COLA

God bless Jimmy Demers the American singer-songwriter, best known as the voice of the worldwide groundbreaking campaign “Always Coca Cola”

Produced in 1992 I have fond memories of this TVC because its release coincided with the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain and was aired practically during every ad break.

Coca Cola (Always The Real Thing)

Wherever there’s a pool there’s always a flirt
Whenever there’s school there’ll always be homework
Whenever there’s a beat there’s always a drum
Wheneverthere’s fun there’s always Coca Cola
(Ba-da-da-da-da-da-da)
Always Coca cola

The stars will always shine
The birds will always sing
As long as there is thurst there’s always the real thing
Coca Cola – always the one
Whenever there is fun there’s always Coca Cola
(Ba-da-da-da-da-da-da)
Always Coca Cola

The stars will always shine
The birds will always sing
As long as there is thurst there’s always the real thing
Coca Cola – always the one
Whenever there is fun there’s always Coca Cola
(Ba-da-da-da-da-da-da)
Always Coca Cola
